Opera 10.0 Alpha 1
11th December 2008
The Norwegian company Opera Software released the first alpha version of its new browser, Opera 10.0 for desktop systems.
The new Opera offers increased performance, a new mechanism for rendering pages Persto 2.2, full relevancy to the Acid 3 test, auto updates, built-in module of spelling-check, as well as improvements in the mail client and widgets for Linux.
The feature of automatic update, implemented in Opera 10.0 Alpha 1, is a good gift for all users of Opera: now they can not only automatically update their browser, but also save all intermediate downloads. The ability to jump to any intermediate version may be useful for individual developers and help services.
The built-in spelling-check module is so far available for American English only. Additional dictionaries must appear in the official version of Opera 10.0.
The built-in mail client Opera Mail for the first time got an opportunity to write and send messages in the form of formatted text. Now you can add to the letter images, links, HTML code and other additional elements. In addition, Opera Mail now supports deleting messages from the POP-server after a specified number of days after receiving.
For widgets used in a Linux / UNIX, Opera 10.0 Alpha 1 for the first time offers experimental support of transparent windows. This requires a graphics subsystem that supports 32-bit images. To run a browser with the support of the mode, you should type “opera-visual 0x6f” in the command line.
