Wikipedia’s founder Jimmy Wales has announced January, 7 of next year the date of starting the new open-source search project aimed to equal competition with Google and other Internet search leaders. Wikia Search will be based on close intercation with users. Their enthusiasm will enable to help in improving sites filtration and rank search results using the model similar to the Wikipedia collaborative work. The main advantage of Wikia Search is the absolute transparency of the search, that is, unlike Yahoo or Google, a visitor will clearly see how results are formed.
Despite the original concept, Wales homself does not expect short-term popularity, and said that the promotion of Wikia Search will take a lot of time and users’ support. "Search is a part of the fundamental infrastructure of the Internet and now it is broken. The main reasons of this are lack of freedom, responsibility, transparency and the absence of the concerned community. We will change this situation," - said Wales, in March. One of the main arguments against private search services has been identified the formation of the search results, with a predominance of advertisement links. As the ultimate goal of the service Wikipedia’s founder sees at least 5% of the whole search market.
