Publisher description for Firebird 2.1.3
For a solid, fully featured relational database, Firebird comes with the standard capabilities of an ANSI SQL database. Windows, Linux, and a wide range of Unix systems are your platforms of choice. Firebird is noted for its triggering capabilities, stored procedures and language support, its high throughput and superb concurrency. As to database size, Firebird deals with several gigabyte dbs as well as it does with a small many meg db. It is a strong capable RDBMS with excellent referential integrity, ACID transactions that are fully compliant, full UDF support, nearly no configuring needed. Supports and is supported by many third party vendors and their tools and tool sets. Firebird touts a wide, global user community that supports each other. You get incremental backups, PSQL with a full cursor implemented, a unique feature where its data writes are done so carefully, and coupled with speedy recovery that you can safely work with no transaction log. Because of such a low level of recovery incidents, you can also survive without specialized DBAs. You have any number of access pathways to your databases. You get temp tables and a 64 bit build if you want it.
