Merrygold performed in school productions and after leaving school in 2004 was cast in a new ITV programme, Fun Song Factory.[2] During January 2008, before JLS were created, Aston auditioned for hit musical series Britannia High on ITV, making it into their Top 16. His musical influences include Michael Jackson, Boyz II Men, Mario, Usher and Chris Brown.[citation needed] After meeting future fellow band member Marvin Humes, Merrygold joined boyband UFO. However, after auditioning for the X Factor, UFO changed their name to JLS, short for Jack the Lad Swing. JLS then went on to the final of the X Factor, where they lost out to Alexandra Burke. However, the following year they released their album and singles, and the album hit #1, as did two of the singles.
