Zero Install program icon

A software installation cross-platform system called Zero install is now available under LGPL. This program serves software developers for publishing their programs directly from their websites. There are a few options that make this easier than otherwise, because now they can centralize distribution of the libraries, digital signatures and much more. This program can complement the current management package of the running operating system. Zero Install never mix with the packages that come with the distribution. Zero Install is not changing the packaging formats or tarballs, but he uses XML metadata for describing the dependencies between these packages. With this program a single metadata file is available to be used on more than one platform at same time. You can use it on the following platforms: Ubuntu, Fedora, Mac OS X, Windows, Debian and FreeBSD. There a few new features that you can’t find in the ordinary package managers. For example: Sharing libraries whenever it is possible, you can install more than one version of package even when it gets in conflict with other requirements. It is great to use it with virtualization and sandbox technologies as the installation is free from side-effects. Every package has their own directory where it gets unpacked, so your shared directories stay untouched. You can include source code repository that allows full control of the developers unreleased version. You can easily clone any repository which will automatically be ready for testing and downloading newer versions of libraries. And all that without interfering with the distributions libraries installed earlier.
