Editor's review BOINC
Use the BOINC program – a software platform geared for volunteer computing, as well as grid computing. When using the program you’ll be able to have project autonomy, which is a plus. There are many projects out there that implement the tool. Each of these projects are independent, using their own databases and servers, so no worries about approvals or a central directory. With the way the tool is set up, it makes it easy for volunteers to get involved in many projects. They will have control of any projects they’re working on, and within BOINC, the resources in the program are then divided, so they’re distributed between these projects. And when a project is down, the resources are redistributed, so they’re allocated properly. The framework of the program itself is also flexible. If you have applications in typical programming languages like C++, they can still be run as a BOINC application, without the hassle of modifying it heavily. Each application is made up of many different files, and includes coordinating scripts. With BOINC, the newest versions of these applications can be done with any volunteer action, lessening the workload. The BOINC program is very security conscious and is made to withstand several kinds of attacks. For example, when using the program and working on projects, digital signatures that utilize key encryption, which prevents viruses from spreading. Along with the security features, the tool also has excellent server software, with the idea of efficiency in mind. Because of the superior server, it can handle millions of jobs coming through the program each day. You also have control over the size of the server’s capacity and you can add more machines. The program is currently being distributed using the lesser general public license, so the applications within the program don’t need to be open source. This is beneficial as the program does support applications that use a lot of data and memory. The data distribution component can actually spread across multiple servers and this lets BOINC transfer so much data without clogging things up. As a user, you’ll be able to specify how much disk usage is occurring, as well as network bandwidth.
