| Description |
ExtMania (Extensions Management System) is an utility for managing file extensions and applications intending for opening and displaying files of certain types. Possibly, many can remember a situation when a just installed program, without informing you, associates with itself certain files that you are used to open and read with the use of some other utility. On the other hand, many of you are aware of that some Internet browsers work faster and are more stable, while others display certain types of pages more correctly. This is why sometimes you would rather use a certain program or, on a different occasion, some other. ExtMania makes this very easy and convenient. The utility creates lists of programs working with certain types of files (having certain extensions). Now, when you click on any file in the Windows Explorer, a small dialogue box, which looks not unlike the standard "Open with..." dialogue, opens. It will offer a list of programs working with this type of files. The ExtMania allows one easily managing this list of programs associated with the file type you choose and delete or edit each program's properties, such as starting parameters or icons. Besides, and this is the most interesting feature, ExtMania monitors all file associations and automatically adds newly installed programs to the lists. ExtMania will immediately alert you to any attempt on the part of any program to associate any one file type with itself.

First of all, you definitely need this program, if you, even infrequently, have to open certain types of files with different applications, such as text, graphic or music editors. And if you do it all the time, you absolutely can not manage without it. You need it, if you work with graphic images with such extensions as .gif, .jpg, etc. using several different graphic editors. When you simply click the file, you open it with the program it is associated with, Photoshop graphics editor for instance. However, what should you do, if you want to open the same file with another editor, viewer or even simply with your Internet Explorer? ExtMania allows to open any types of files with whatever applications - quickly and easily, create default associations between these types of files and applications, and flexibly manage such associations.
On other occasions when you, more or less frequently, install new applications in your computer, these applications, as you may have noticed, often immediately associate certain filetypes with themselves. For instance, a newly installed archiving application may associate all and any files with .zip extension - with itself. Now you can no longer use good old WinZip by simply clicking on a .zip archive. As soon as you try it, your new archive manager springs into action, even if you installed it for special rare occasions. ExtMania will save you this problem. Now, if any application attempts changing file assopciations, the process will remain entirely under your control.
Generally speaking, there may be lots of occasions when you are hard-pressed without ExtMania. For instance, you want certain types of files to be opened with a certain application, yet there is no such association in your computer. This may happen when you want document files containing your personal records to have a distinct but unusual extension, such as .me and still to be opened with your text editor, NotePad or Microsoft Excel by simply clicking on them.
Sometimes you remove an application program from your computer. This may leave you with a file association leading up a blind alley. Now, when trying to open files of certain types you will continue getting error messages. In any such case, ExtMania will save you the trouble of correcting the Windows regisry or try and manage this assiciation through the "Types of Files" section of the standard Folder Properties menue. Who did that, knows how inconvenient it may be.
ExtMania allows creating, changing or removing associations between any filetypes (extensions) and any applications and have the process of association creation by all and any applications you may install - under your entire control.
Besides, ExtMania creates a file opening log, which will enable you to repeat any previous methods of opening any files with any extensions or use a different application to do that.
The summary is obvious: ExtMania is a utility that gives any computer user a definite advantage and convenience when working with any filetypes or applications. Once you get used to it, you will hardly want to have it no more. The presence of this utility is in order in any computer of any user. Just download and try it out. You will like it.

I find EXTMania to be an extremely easy and ideal program for taking control of file associations. The additional feature of being able to easily change command parameters and icon associations is a very nice touch!
