Publisher description for WipeFile
A deleted file can easily be recovered with an undelete utility if it hasn`t been overwritten. In some cases, you need to be certain that some data is completely erased and unrecoverable. An example of such a case is selling or borrowing your hard disk. Maybe you have some private pictures/documents that you don`t want anybody else to see or maybe you stored a few passwords in some files. In such situations, WipeFile can permanently erase your files. It`s a simple but effective application that includes 14 wiping methods. One of the most extreme is the Peter Gutmann method which overwrites the clusters occupied by the file(s) for 35 times. The application is, by default, switched to the Deutsch language but the developer was considerate enough to leave in English the parts of the menu that you need to go through to change the language (Extras->Language->English).Although this program is minimal, it has a feature that may be overlooked but can turn out to be very useful to some users: file masks. This allows you to choose a folder that you want wiped and then change the file mask to something like *.jpg so that only the JPG files get wiped. In conclusion, there are three qualities that describe this utility: simple, effective and free.
